Hilde Schibeiker sat at her vanity, waiting for the car to arrive to take her to the church, staring at her reflection. The dress she wore was a simply cut long ivory gown; it was classic and elegant. The way the man she was to marry liked things, simple yet with an air of elegance and a classic style. -Why am I marrying him? I don't love him; not really, I only love him as a brother. I love Duo, not him. Why am I doing this? Because Duo left, he left without a word and he's been gone for five years that's why Schibeiker. You couldn't wait around forever; you didn't want to be alone in this big world now did you? No I didn't, but why am I marrying him? Duo where are you? Why didn't you come back for me as you did before? Why did you runaway, was it me, was I putting too much pressure on you? Duo, you could always make me laugh, even during the worst situations, I miss you. I miss that sense of humor. Are you dead, happy, or with the love of your life? I wish you were here with me Duo, I wish that you were the man that I was marrying today. -
"Miss Schibeiker? The cars here."
"I'll be right down Hannah." -I've certainly moved up in life, from my grandparents junkyard to this manor. Everything changed when the war ended; who would have thought that I would became a famous actress. What you think of me now Duo? -
Half an hour earlier a young man sat in a roadside Diner reading the newspaper. The young man had a lean physique and his hair was in a braid that must have measured more than a meter. From the back, he could be mistaken for a girl because of his incredible hair. By some stroke of luck or maybe it was fate the young man glanced at the announcements column on the right hand side of the front page. A name caught his eye, Hilde Schibeiker, next to her name was another, a name that he knew well. The names in themselves didn't shock him it was the words that followed the names which accomplished that task. "To be united today in Holy Matrimony at the Trinity Church on 2nd Street at 3o'clock. We celebrate the famous actress Hilde's upcoming union to the leading man in her life." -WHAT??? Hilde you?re getting married, is he worthy of your love Hilde? Can he provide you with everything you need not only the security of wealth but also the security of love? Will he be able to talk you out of your wild schemes, or if not will he be able to protect you from harm during one of your wild schemes? DAMMIT Hilde, why couldn't you wait for me? Why? I love you, couldn't you see that, I should be the man you are going to marry not him. -
"Sir, Sir? Would you like a refill for your coffee?"
"Uh, what? A refill? No thank you, I'll just pay for this and be on my way."
"Ok, sir. It'll be 2 credits."
"Here you go," he said handing over a 5-credit chip, "by the way what's the time?"
"2:15 sir."
"Thanks," the man threw over his shoulder as he dashed out the door intent on accomplishing his new mission. Get Hilde back.
"Wait, Sir, your change..." the exasperated waitress said. The young man didn't even hear her he was already turning the corner on his motorcycle immersed in his thoughts. -I have 45 minutes to get there; I want to know if she loves him or if she loves me? And if she doesn't love him then I'm going to make sure that that wedding doesn't happen. I'm not loosing her if I don't have to, I refuse. I've lost to many people that are important to me, I wont lose someone else I care about.- The young man continued his breakneck speed across town intent on his goal. He reached the church at 3:05, the traffic had been bad causing him to loose precious time. When he got to the church thought he was delighted to see that the ceremony had been delayed. Using his skills of stealth that he had acquired and honed to perfection while he was a Gundam pilot he snuck into the church and took a seat in one of the back rows.
From his vantagepoint, he could see the groom waiting nervously at the altar waiting for his bride to arrive. A few miles away from the church a car approached, that car held the bride, one Hilde Schibeiker.
"Miss Hilde, are you okay? You look a little nervous."
"oh I wonder, I'm getting married today, of course I'm nervous." -Especially seeing as I'm not marrying the man I truly love. Dammit Duo, why can't I just forget about you, it would save me a lot of heartbreak. I would be able to love Quatre completely, Duo you'll always be impossible.-
"Miss Hilde, we're here. It's time for you to go inside, everyone's waiting for you."
"Yes, I'm coming."
Hilde then walked into the church and gasped at the splendor presented before her, Quatre had certainly gone out of his way to make this day beautiful for her. She couldn't help but smile when she saw the 40 loyal Maguanac's sitting in the first few pews. Standing by Quatre were Heero, Wufei, and Trowa, they were all dressed in penguin suits as she liked to call them. Her bridesmaids then preceded her, Relena, Rei, and Michelle. Relena was her maid of honor, they all looked beautiful in simple hunter green gowns that shimmered in the light.
Then the wedding march started, signaling it was Hilde's turn to walk up the aisle, the young man watched her pensively weighing his decision to interrupt the wedding. He wasn't looking forward to angering those Maguanac's but he'd do anything for the woman he loved. Even stand aside and let her marry Quatre his friend from the war. -He's not right for you Hilde, can't you see that? Will you be able to see that if I speak up? or will those Maguanac's kill me for interrupting their beloved Master Quatre's wedding. God Hilde, your beautiful.-
"Dearly beloved we are gathered here today to witness the union of Hilde Schibeiker and Quatre Raberba Winner. If anyone has any objections to this matrimony let them speak now or forever hold their peace." The priest said, while glancing around the church quickly as he always did at this point in the ceremony. He was just about to begin when someone stepped out into the aisle, a young man from the looks of him.
"I object father."
"Who are you? What objections do you have young man, this better not be a prank." As the priest said this the Magnuanac soldiers began to stand, and the young man began to sweat.
"My name is Duo Maxwell, I have a question for the bride to be, an important question and I can't let this wedding continue until she had answered me."
"Very well then, ask her."
"This would be better said in private sir."
"Madam what do you say about this request," the priest asked the shocked Hilde. All the color had drained from her face when she had recognized the voice and then when the person gave the confirmation of their identity.
"I'll speak with him alone, sir."
"Are you sure Hilde? Do you want me to come with you?"
"I'll be fine Quatre."
The priest then led the bride to be and the young man to a little used room of the side of the church.
"What did you want to say Duo?"
"I just have a simple question, do you love him?"
"That's none of your concern."
"Yes, it is. DAMMIT Hilde couldn't you see that I loved you!"
"Loved, and anyway you disappeared for five years, did you expect me to wait forever. Well did you? I moved on Duo, you should do the same," Hilde said all the while trying to keep the uncertainty from reaching her voice.
"Fine, then. If you don't believe me, I'll just let you ruin your life."
"Who are you to say that I'm ruining my life, just because it won?t be with you doesn't mean that it will be ruined."
"I give up, I made a promise to myself to ask you that question and then if you truly wanted me to I would stand aside. It seems that I am to stand aside."
"Yes, now I have a wedding to get back to."
Hilde and Duo then walked out of the room, to see the anxious faces of the people in the church and the killer stares from Quatre's Maguanacs.
"You may continue."
"You've removed your objection?"
"Yes, I have," said a very subdued Duo. Quatre looked delighted at those few words and the Maguanac's settled down slightly when they saw their master's joy.
"Alright then, we shall continue..." Hilde heard no more of what the priest said, one thought was running through her head repeatedly. -He love's me, he love's me...- Duo meanwhile was watching the ceremony dejectedly, his heart tearing in two as he watched the only woman he had ever loved marry one of his dear friends.-Hilde I will forever love you, and I will try to be happy for you and Quatre.-
"Miss Schibeiker?"
"Hmmm?"
"We need your answer."
"Say I do," Relena whispered to Hilde.
"oh yeah, sorry. I, I, I... I'm sorry I can't. Quatre I do love you and I'm sorry for this but I can only love you like a brother. It wouldn't be fair to you. I'm sorry." With that, she ran from the church, ran the pain she had caused, and she ran from the Maguanac's in case they decided they needed to speak with her. she hadn't noticed the dark figure following her until he placed a hand on her shoulder causing her to jump.
"It's just me Hilde. Why couldn't you do it?"
"I just kept on thinking about you, this whole engagement I've been wishing it was you. To make it hurt less I had convinced myself that you despised me, that you couldn't hold any love for me. That you didn't care. I've missed you so much, I love you, I always have."
"Hilde, come on let's get outta here, I'm a little nervous about those Maguanac's they scare me."
"Yeah they are a little intimidating."
Duo and Hilde then walked to Duo's bike and were off in a matter of seconds, just before a hysterical groom can running out of the church. Quatre had just shed his paralysis and had gone to find Hilde to speak to her about her decision, he had missed her by seconds.
3 months later Duo and Hilde returned to the town, to see the people, which they had hurt. They were now married and had been since the day after they had left the Trinity Church on Duo's motorcycle.
"Hi, Quatre. No hard feelings man?"
"None, I actually want to thank you Duo. You stopped me from making the biggest mistake in my life. Why don't you come in for some tea?"
That day was a day for reconciliation?s, and reunions. Duo and Hilde were happy together and everyone was glad for them they just wished that maybe they could have done that sooner. They continued to talk long into the night about everything from the weather to the greater meaning of battle. Everything was set to rights that night all the burned bridges were finally repaired.
